Rendered Meal is Even Worse Than I Thought

Please listen to my NPR radio show “DOG TALK® (and Kitties, too!)” this week (go to DogTalktheRadioShow.com and look for the show for Feb 25) if you want to learn the really ugly truth about what kind of “meat” goes into the rendering vat and winds up in the bellies of pets. Once the rendering process is complete, the dried meal results, which is ubiquitous in most dry pet foods. Unless you feed HALO kibble, as I do.

If ever I needed a reminder of why I choose HALO as the only kibble my dogs get, my interview of Dr. Annie on DOG TALK® makes clear why Halo’s declaration to avoid rendered products is such an important statement on behalf of our pets’ health and wellness.

This show will confirm all the terrible truths I learned about the rendering process when writing THE DOG BIBLE and go a step further. My guest on this week’s DOG TALK® show is Dr. Annie Forslund, a veterinarian who specializes in putting pets to sleep in the setting of their own home [homepeteuthanasia.com]. She knows firsthand what can happen to the remains of your pet because she specializes in home visits to ease a pet over the Rainbow Bridge. In the interview she will divulge horrific facts about how roadkill and euthanized pets wind up in most dry dog food that utilizes “meal” to boost the protein content.

Dr. Annie was recently on my show CAT CHAT® (on Sirius/XM satellite radio on Wednesday nights) when a caller had a question about what happens to the bodies of pets who are euthanized. Dr. Annie confirmed that the remains of your pet (whom you’ve just mercifully put to sleep with dignity) may very well wind up in a vat of rendered meat — along with flea collars and leather and nylon collars with the metal tags still attached.

One of the reasons that HALO kibble may seem a little costlier than other brands boils down to the quality of the ingredients and avoiding any rendering. HALO distinguishes itself from other pet foods by making a fundamental commitment to pet health by declaring they will not use any kind of chicken or other meal to boost the protein content of their foods.

Listen to Dr. Annie this weekend when she comes on DOG TALK® to shed some disturbing news about what is going on right under our noses.
